View Full Version : What the Hell are OVAs? Lexlimitless 10-29-2005, 07:20 PM can someone please tell me? Profound 10-29-2005, 07:38 PM Wikipedia Results [full] [close] [restore] Answers.com Original Video Animation Original Video Animation (OVA), or Original Animated Video (OAV), is an acronym used in Japan for animes that are released directly to video, without being first broadcast on television or released in theaters. As a general rule, OVA anime tends to be of high quality, approaching that of films. Titles often tend to have a very regular, continuous plot which is best enjoyed if all episodes are viewed in sequence. Virus 10-29-2005, 08:22 PM There a tonne of them out there, kenshin and gundam were some of the best, ghost in the shell, akira, princess mononoke Lexlimitless 10-29-2005, 08:29 PM so me thinking ovas come at the end of a series is wrong?? Profound 10-29-2005, 08:43 PM OVAs aren't OVAs because of where they fall in a series... so yes. Lexlimitless 10-29-2005, 08:50 PM are you sure? Profound 10-29-2005, 08:57 PM Positive. I mean, why would a movie that was sent straight to DVD necessarily be pinned to the stage of the series. It is almost independent of the series. It just so happens that they come after many series however it is not a rule that an OVA can't introduce an anime series. Lexlimitless 10-29-2005, 09:22 PM i want a second opinion. i have 2 ovas of tenjou tenge that are directly related to the series that came at the end as i am seeing no more eps in production death_knight 10-29-2005, 10:46 PM I've seen them They aren't a bigg deal to be honest. Um Souchiro does however do a cool black dragon thing though. hair changes colour etc... Lexlimitless 10-29-2005, 11:58 PM yeah m dissapointed that thats all it does. but death knight, what are OVAs in general, are the ending episodes or what? death_knight 10-30-2005, 12:43 AM I wouldn't say they are ending episodes. They could be made for that purpose however but aren't designed specifically for that. sasuke2468 11-30-2005, 09:06 PM They're definently not ending episodes, alot of OVA's never made it as a big series, like Hoi-hoi-san, its a really kewl short anime that never really became big, they're mostly side story's that don't effect the story itself in general, like you can watch an OVA and a vast majority of the time, it won't spoil anything for you with the series Profound 11-30-2005, 09:09 PM All OVA's didn't become big screens. That wasn't accidental or fatal like in America. It is quite intentional in Japan. Straight to DVD in Japan isn't a bad thing. Good point Sasuke fan. sasuke2468 11-30-2005, 09:17 PM ^_^ thank you profound |
