1) Go ahead and duplicate the objects layer...

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3605/39618351om7cq6.jpg
2) go to image >adjustments >levels ...then make the output levels both "0" ...

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/1706/83698058vm8vh9.jpg
3) Place the duplicated layer behind the original layer...

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/2903/83698058vm8do7.jpg
4) Select the duplication layer and go to Edit > Free Transform

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/5058/69484394tz5xe6.jpg
5) Now this step is the most variable...depends on the size and shape of the object but the general idea is to adjust the angle to around 90 degrees and then lower the width and increase the height to create the proportions that would simulate a shadow : so generally its 30% the width and then 120% height...

6) Now naturally a shadow isn't a solid object its transperent...so reduce the opticity to around 70%-80%...to look like this

And here it is with everything in conclusion, ya pretty crude....sorry for the big images did this all in rush...and hope this helps *shrug*

Hmm... i think you should have angled the shadow and skinny it out a bit more.... cause the tail shadow is kinda in front of the tail itself.

Decent. Not bad. Even if you think it's bad, it will at least get the basic idea across to n00bs like myself. From there I can easily manipulate the image from then on.
