Story

The first words that comes to mind in relation to this series, is epic, fantasy. An anime involving dragons, a parallel worlds, strange intelligent species and people having angelic features.

Escaflowne follows a not so original plot line of “school girl swept away to a fantasy world”, however the premise of destiny and ones control over it was explored in a pretty interesting manner. Hitomi struggles with her abilities of seeing the future of this world and her companions. in the initial stages of her existence in the alternate world “Gaea” she begs to user her permission to add her companions Allan Shezar, lord van fanel (king of fanelia). later hitomi learns that her powers could be the source of trouble that sometimes bother them on their journey to save Gaea from the perilous future that awaits.

Characters

Allan – pretty much the stand up guy, all for justice personality. his character is among the most balanced throughout the anime

Van Fanel- typical hot blooded stereotype. fights for revenge and places another reason as an excuse, very selfless and brave and ultimately stupid in his decisions

Hitomi – A very annoying character for most of the anime, she wallows in self pitty majority of the time and gives the speech “its all my fault” for most of the anime for anything that goes wrong. she was a believable characters in that, she couldn't make up her mind about who she had stronger feelings for “very realistic of a school girl of her age”.

Fulkan Fanel – The renegade sun of the kingdom of fanelia, the true and rightful heir to the throne. but is intruduced as a major antagonist to the story. fulkan is not the typical villain, he believes what he is doing is correct and the best possible future for the survival of his world Gaea.

Value

Escaflowne is defiantly up there in the re-watchable anime list and still holding the entertainment value that it had on your the firsttime.

Wasn't too fond of the movie, but the series I liked a lot. Fulkan was .. hmm.. more of a brother in the show than the movie.

Great series, should watch it if you have not seen it yet, the movie was also pretty good, like the magic in it and the fight scenes were better than the series.
