wen it comes up type this in:: expand -r sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32 or expand -r sndvol32.ex_ %systemroot%\system32(/i)
and let me know wat happens

Looks like BLINDZ has his hands full. I didn't read it fully previously and was typing nothing related to your problem. It would seem you need to reinstall your sound stuff.

What it seems like is that you have sound, but your SNDVOL32 file isn't there. Got to START then RUN and type in SNDVOL32 and tell us what happens. Disregard the stuff below, I was writing it prior to reading the story fully. You could still try it if you like though, but based on what BLINDZ is suggesting, I'm not sure it will work.

Also, you're getting "Can't open input file: expand." when you're at the command prompt. Go to START, then RUN then type CMD and press ENTER on the keyboard. From there, type EXPAND and you should see something like this:

If not, then you have issues. Let us know how things work out.

DISREGARD THE QUOTED STUFF, WAS GONNA SUGGEST THAT BEFORE READING

Try thus: Go START/CONTROL PANNEL and then go SOUNDS, SPEECH AND AUDIO DEVICES, then go to SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES PROPERTIES.

There's a checkbox beside PLACE VOLUME ICON IN THE TASKBAR. If it's checked, just

aight, so heres wat a little research has discovered

Microsofts' Solution (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319095)

if u can't find ur cd I THINK u can try and locate a folder called i386 if it exists, and browse to that folder with command prompt and then run the expand command. haven't found nething yet re install without the disc, but try and let me know wat happens

Ditto with what BLINDZ said. I checked and this is the solution he is providing. If you can't find the i386 folder, then let us know. In the mean time I'll be looking for the dependent files and upload them for you to get.

http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/ArticleID/39410/39410.html

Taking it from the MS website, I believe the dependent files needed will turn up after you get the SNDVOL32 file.

Download Link Here (http://www.vectormediasoftware.com/sndvol32.exe)

Waiting to hear your results. After downloading the file, place it in C:\Windows\System32 folder. Standing by.

Thank you guys so much for helping and sorry for not coming sooner to give you an update on whats going on. I finally found i386!!!!!!!

Ive tried Blindz's method: I went to run>browse>c drive>system32>the little whit box thingy...and this is what I got "The C:\i386\SYSTEM32\SMSS.EXE application cannot be run in Win32 mode"

I clicked on the second link Khat gave me with the direct d/load... the sndvol control was d/loaded but the pc is still saying it is not installed when I try to put the icon in the task bar.

I tried following the instructions from the first link Khat gave as well...but when I type in <cd drive>: I get, "The system cannot find the specified file."

Now, I dont know if it was something that I did but I notice about 2 days now that my win med player is not in my start up menu, on the desktop or in the option when I right click on a music file from my document. I dont know whts happening. In order to get it playing I have to select all the music files in the folder then select play.
So right now I dont know where the media player is. Im doing a virus scan but I doubt there is a virus.

Thanx for all the help ^_^:tighthug:

after all that..it looks like windows just cut with the volume settings. wouldn't a restoration to a previous date fix that?
When things like that happen a restoration usually fix it for me.

That might fix it temporarily. I had done that already...some weeks ago.

did u install any new programs, or has windows done any updates?

I think I installed Quick Time and I don't remember if updates were done before, during or after the problems began...but you know what, last night I realized that three (3) system32 files were in the Avast Chest. I tried restoring but it says they cannot be restored because they're being accessed by another program.

NB..in case I didnt tell you, since I d/loaded the sndvol from the direct link khat gave me, I was able to turn the volume up. ^_^ Arigatou ne
