I got a file from someone which was a DOCX file. DOC is the extension for the traditional MS Word document files, and DOCX is the new format for Word 2007. Naturally it couldn't open in my Office 2003 applications. After doing some digging online, I found that the site above (Microsoft) had an update that would allow you to open the documents in your existing version of MS Office. The link below is a link to a free site that will convert the DOCX files for you. Only issue I have is that it takes a long time to get done - especially if you need it right away. Hope the info helps.

Thanks for the info. Running Office 2007, but it's still nice to know.

word 2003 opened the 2007 file for me, in fact what it did was convert the file to a format that it understood. but isn't the extension for the templates of word 2003 document .docx though?

The extension is a DOT file. DOCX is exclusie to 2007.

Office 2007 was made to work with Vista. The entire theme and layout is Vista-esque.
