Webshots was my original application of choice back in the day. I didn't like the fact that it created those .WBC files, but it was fine as long as I had all my stuff categorized, and it made it easier to have the large quantity of photos and such organized and in one place. Then they updated Webshots and that was it for me - I never used Webshots again. Old webshots had the WBC files that contained your pics in catalogues with matching names. New Webshots now creates serialized folders with serialized file names - in original JPG/GIF format - but uses some other data file to tell the program which file/folder contains what. Not very nice for someone who wants to cataolgue their pics on the drive in whatever folders they may be in.
After many years of not managing my pics, I decided to do some hunting again, and came across Picassa2. Very nice program from Google, and with only one fault that I can find. Outside of the fact that there's no easy way to set a particular picture as your desktop wallpaper, the program works beautifully. It only cataolgues the files on your disk, and does not create duplicates of them when you create a category. Your category or group - when created - can easily be manipulated and moved around, then selected and moved to a folder of your choice, once it was indexed by the program. This makes management so much easier. I also tested by creating a category from a folder that I had.
After finding another set of pictures that belonged in that categorized folder, I then placed them all in a new group that I created and then moved the entire group - including the pictures that were already in said folder - to the folder. After asking if I was sure I wanted to move all the pictures to that location on my hard drive, I checked to see how the program handled it. No duplicates were created. All it did was add the files that were not already there. As such, I give this program 2 thumbs up. If only they had either a hotkey or a quick option/button to set the pic as wallpaper - IMO - it would be the ultimate picture management program.
