WARNING: MILD SPOILERS
AIR is a decent anime. The movie and series are done by two different groups, showing somewhat alternate views or paths to a similar ending.
Basically it's about a girl from the past who is reincarnated to experience the same fate until the curse on her can be broken.
AIR is an anime based on an ecchi game.
And here are the heavy spoilers.
The ending in both the series and movie suxxorz IMO. The ending was not conclusive, and though you can tell why and they leave it up to your imagination, it was still bad in my opinion.
The character development was very nice, and the flashbacks were ok - overall the only difference in the story between the movie and series is the level of affection shown between the characters and the difference in the amount of money Yukito makes.
Personally, I can see where the story went, but without an continuation it makes me frustrated that they didn't do more. IMO - if the animators had time to make a movie (granted a different group) with an almost completely different story (well a different path to the ending) then they could have put a more conclusive ending.
Until they animate something else to end it, your choices are that she continues to reincarnate till someone breaks the curse, or Yukito goes out and saves her next incarnation, or she never gets saved. Tough choices, but that's how it is.
Outside of the sucky ending, the story in the series is a lot more funny than in the movie. The movie story is more romance based. Your choice. The movie is - obviously - shorter than the series, but the end result is the same, with almost the same ending. Only difference is that in the series Yukito ran away hoping that though he loved her, his absence would save her life. He was wrong.
MOVIE ENDING - He's determined to save her and goes to do so.
SERIES ENDING - He tries to save her by leaving before she gets worse, and may probably never know what happens.
- OVERALL ENDING (My Opinion) -
Yukito (MOVIE) will either succeed or fail in his quest.
Yukito (SERIES) may encounter her again in his travels.
Misuzu/Kanna will be reincarnated - series or movie.
Misuzu/Kanna will either get saved by Yukito, or one of his decendants.
Misuzu/Kanna will instantly identify Yukito/his decendant due to the bond they had before.
Either way, the short version is she'll either keep dying and coming back, or eventually get saved.
Personally, I'm waiting to see if they'll animate more. If it gets conclusive, I'll give this anime more ratings. Story makes it worth watching once.
