Alright last weeks little dip into translation has inspired me to think about starting a scanlation group. I think its possible, and its not hard with just a few things.
For the staff we need 2 or 3 more translators (a good understanding would be great). We dont mean you have to be perfect in japanese, If you are... intermediate level that would be good. If you can read manga with just a dictionary even better
We would also need 2 cleaners & typesetters. Now these people have to have considerable experience in photoshop (or whatever photo editing program you want), enough so that you can just erase the text in bubbles and replace with the translated text. I would love somebody who is good enough to raise the quality of the manga from low quality to a medium or even high quality but since its a start i'm not asking for too much.
One person, whoever's best at it... needs to also scower the internet for raws of the manga's we will be translating and notify us of whenever it becomes available.

Now this is a really simple thing (its much easier than it sounds) and i think we can do it and be able to release fairly quick scanlations after about a month or two of practice. However this is why i turn to you guys. If you know anybody who can help in any of the jobs above and is willing to give their time... If he/she isn't on AS, then tell them they should've joined AS yesterday. Its gonna be a fun project, and it will help to bring AS to newer heights and help so that we dont shut down within the next couple of months due to inactivity (which seems quite likely at the moment)... So what do you guys think.

it sounds like a decent plan and ting. im always up for learning how to do things especially wid photoshop so yeah i guess u can jot me down a ways for ma spare time i can do some typesetting/cleaning up or watever. fun trying new things and see how it goes

I have some people in my class who said they are willing to help in the translations, all of them are already on AS just not frequenters, but i'm gonna get em into this thing.

There is one post that we really NEED to be filled however, we need somebody who can find raws and post 'em. Also i think we goin need a section for the scanlations dk... but not till we have finalized our plans.

Alright as long as we can get an early and steady stream of raws coming in i dont care where they are coming from... So basically once my classmates get their asses in the discussion the scanlation may begin as soon as next week

OK so now we have 3 translators... two cleaners (we need more) and DK can also find the raws we need so he has a dual job.

So we have one more decision to make....

What manga are we gonna start scanlating first? Yes we are gonna start with just one manga, until we have garnered the necessary speed then it wouldn't make much sense for us to be taking on more than one project at a time now would it. So somebody start a poll.

But which one? Skillachi was saying that we shud have a knowledge of what's going on in it. So it wud be one that's really popular or one that just started.

I"ld op for a new manga.. Because honestly naruto and bleach are well seated. and majority of the readers have their sources.

Yeah, definitely 1 manga; preferably one that's not boring and one that uses relatively simple language if we can find such a thing.

Im not gonna be helping with this... I cant translate or have the software to clean, but maybe I can find RAWS.. but DK is already doing that.. dont need more than one person for that.

I suggest you guys start with Naruto/Bleach... since they come out weekly and are very popular.
Yes I know they already have MANY people scanlating these.... BUT.. since they come out weekly... it will give you guys a chance to practice and see how well you do with one a week.
And if you guys scanlate extremely well and clean and faster than the rest... people will start picking up your version of the manga.

And then you can branch off from there and pick up more mangas.

Shini if you can beat DK to the raws then by all means please help out. Of course all help will be appreciated.

Oh I also dont expect that we will actually start doing any form of subbing till at least next week so all people who will be helping just relax a bit the work is yet to begin. We still have some decisions to make before we go any further...

Ok cool Blindz you're now staffed.... remember guys this is just a little project for AS, (and hopefully soon to di worl'!). Everybody on this project i expect to take it seriously, however I think it will be able to help us all, for us translators, it helps us in our overall understanding of the language, for the cleaners and typesetters it helps in your overall understanding of pshop or whatever program you are using. Hopefully by next year this time we will be subbing like 5 manga's and be uber fast and well renowned and also good quality. This will help to grow the AS community and each of us so jump on the wagon guys! The more the better

Oh just to add i voted for new manga, the manga i was thinking about in particular is one piece... i know most AS people dont read one piece but I picked it because i know that there aren't many people actually doing manga scanlations for one piece, its like the last manga to get subbed every friday so I'm guessing we may be able to actually beat all the scanlators to this one and get attention, so its a plus for us. But i'm always willing to try any other manga though

i would think that we should start with the popular ones that everyone reads. and as we become more efficient at it, we move on to another one. especially since we might not know if some of the others are good.

I suggest a new manga just so people will view yours.. Honestly when it comes to mangas its whos the fastest with me... So i mean if you get really good at it go for naruto :D but otherwise i suggest a new manga... Im sure you could post ur releases on www.mangashare.com once its up and running...

i'll endorse the One Piece, its one that is somewhat popular on this site.

I voted "new manga"; I think starting a new manga would be good since we'd be one of the few scanslators, and people will be more dependent on us. And it'd help us as well: to read the manga from the beginning would be better for us since we'd be use to all the names and the language of the manga from the very beginning instead of breaking into it midway.

Your problem is that most new mangas are shoujo mangas aimed for females... hardly any new action mangas are new.

Well, as Buffy said, if we'd be doin One Piece, it'd be best to read the whole thing first; it helps with translation to know the story. That's why i suggested new manga.

I wish I could help find new manga; but I have no idea where to go. I'm assuming most people here would want shounen manga instead of shoujo; personally, it doesn't matter to me if the storyline's interesting enough... But then, shoujo can be boring, can't they...?

Uh huh.. so just cause is Shoujo, which means for females.. it can be boring? Sexist pig. :p

Anywho, majority of shoujo comprise of Romantic Comedy, and can have sci fi and/or fantasy mixed in... or it can be a sad story. Can have action.. but the main thing is probably the romance.

So you would have to ask yourselves.. are you catering for action crowd since most of you are males... or will you cater to the whichever is next and upcoming manga.

Thing about shoujo mangas is that a lot of ONESHOTS come out.. so they only like couple chapters long.. not more than a volume.

And I think that would be good for you guys since you starting out, and wont have to try rush to finish a weekly manga.

So once your speed and accuracy goes up, you can move on to the longer stuff... and still do the Shoujo stuff.. cause Im dying for some Shoujo mangas to finish up!!!!!!!!! *cry*

*sigh* Ok shini we know you want a shoujo. Which shoujo do you want? I'd still prefer a shonen manga myself though but if we cant get a solution soon then i dont see why we cant do a shoujo. (you can call me sexist but shoujou manga are normally hella boring).

Eh, to be fair, Shini, I actually like Sailor Moon, the shoujo of all shoujo :); but shoujo tends to lack the action and excitement that males tend to go for (me, too, of course); as I said storyline's important to me, along with uniqueness when it comes to which anime I like.

Anyway, I'm going to be book solid busy until April 12th there after I could be busy afterward but it depends on how the chips fall. Cleaning is like inking and it's something I have done but seriously don't like. Type setting is all good for me so put me done for that as a definite. I can look for RAWs too since I have a magical way of finding anything I want online.
I've been practicing my coloring so maybe we could put out regular colored pages. But that is a long shot and shoul be left until we are "Stable".
All in all I am in and willing to work with ust about any kind of Manga.
Except hentai of course.... no thanks...

Point of this thread and project is to translate mangas that have just been released in japan so that english speakers can read em as soon as possible.
EG Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Inuyasha, etc.

Ok so Soul Eater and Prysen seem to be the top ones.
Read off Prysen and I have to admit it seems great. Still reading Soul Eater.
Prysen = 14 chaps currently
Soul Eater = 20 chaps currently

Prysen seems a little easier in terms of cleaning and such if you ask me, while Soul Eater has a lot of back ground flair and some nice detail which will be a pain to work on.

Just things for consideration.

if the translation team is ready, why not just do Prysen this week to see how it works out. not getting anywhere if we can't decide which manga to use

Skillachi, for this to work, take the initiative to keep in constant communication with your manga staff.
Its not going to work if you dont keep ahead of everything.
