Just a quickie. The word on the street (IRC) is that most anime groups will be moving toward MKV/X264. MKV is more flexable, and X264 just KICKS A$$!!!! when it comes to encoding anime. Some groups that do TV-RIPS may not go this route, as it's easier to make a hardsub file.........or is it? Most groups use SUB STATION ALPHA to create their subtitle files. At the end of it all, they remux the thing into a single AVI. IMO, it's a lot easier to stick it into an MKV and take around 30seconds to mux it, instead of however long to do over the whole thing.

The only problem is that some groups would want to watermark/logo a portion of the video so their work is known and cannot be stolen. This can still be done and then remuxed. Some tools for us all to know if we want to do video:

SUB STATION ALPHA - Subtitles
VIRTUAL DUB MOD - To edit MKV/OGM and convert
OGMTOOLS - to make OGM
MKVTOOLNIX - to make MKV
GORDIAN KNOT - for general ripping/encoding/muxing

There are more, but it all depends on what you need. PM me or IM me and we can go into more detail, or expand the thread and we can delve into it.

wow so they really gonna make that move now, i guess people just needto get better intarweb connections cuase the only prob i ever had with mkv was filesize and its worth it in comparison to quality so... i guess its not really a problem.

With Flow's current packages and pricing (http://www.flowjamaica.com/residential_click.htm#click), I think most people wont have a bandwidth problem. But this is why I'd love to establish the trading properly (http://www.animesynergy.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=34), so that we don't waste bandwidth. Those that are already in OGM format need not be re-downloaded, as OGM is just as good. There are some issues though, which is one reason for the switch. Was talking on IRC with someone from ANIME-APEX (http://www.anime-apex.com/), and they have a release in OGM/XVID, but they're doing it over in MKV/X264. The subs in the OGM are out of sync occasionally, and it's because of the format. MKV works with no worries. X264 gives better quality than DIVX/XVID at lower bitrates, and much better at the same or higher.

Hopefully we'll get the routes setup, and we can trade around the island without much trouble, and stop wasting bandwidth by everyone trying to download the same thing.

*edit*

If you want to verify on IRC, go to irc.immortal-anime.net and check into any of the groups there. You can ask about the different formats and reasons for going MKV.
